What You Will Be Doing
The Mechanical Design Engineering (MDE) Team is seeking a Senior Packaging Design Engineer to join our team. As a member of the MDE team, you will be a driving force of innovation and help build the future of electric vehicle charging.
The Senior Packaging Design Engineer will play a direct role in the packaging and label designs for ChargePoint’s products. We are seeking a confident and personable engineer with exceptional packaging design experience, including design for manufacturing and design for cost.
What You Will Bring to ChargePoint
As a Senior Packaging Design Engineer, your responsibilities will focus on both working with Contract Manufacturing’s packaging engineers, as well as designing packaging and labels directly. Focusing on cost effectiveness, packaging testing, design for packaging performance of current production and new products:
- Use CAD software and other design tools to create packaging models and specifications that meet ISTA standards, such as 2A, 2B.
- Design product labels that are visually appealing, informative, and compliant with regulatory standards. Using graphic design software (e.g., Adobe Illustrator)
- Lead and mentor packaging design engineers working at contract manufacturing sites, ensuring alignment with company standards and project goals.
- Coordinate cross-site packaging development efforts, managing timelines, deliverables, and communication between internal teams and external partners.
- Conduct prototyping and testing to validate packaging performance under various conditions (e.g., drop tests, vibration tests).
- Establish design best practices and technical guidelines for packaging engineers across multiple contract manufacturers.
- Review and approve packaging designs submitted by contract teams, providing feedback and ensuring compliance with performance, sustainability, and cost targets.
- Facilitate training and knowledge sharing, helping contract engineers stay updated on new materials, technologies, and regulatory changes.
- Resolve technical challenges and escalate issues as needed to ensure smooth execution of packaging programs.
- Act as the primary point of contact between internal stakeholders and contract packaging teams, fostering strong relationships and accountability.
- Identifying design opportunities for quality, cost, assembly, and manufacturing
Requirements
- Fluent in Mandarin, and able to communicate technically in English with USA and UK-based design teams.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Packaging Engineering or related field
- Minimum 5 years of industry experience as a Packaging Design Engineer
- Proficient in CAD, 5 yrs minimum.
- Strong working knowledge of packaging materials, including corrugated materials, plastics, pallets, and sustainable alternatives.
- A self-starter who is comfortable driving multiple parts and aspects of the product design process simultaneously.
- Ability to learn quickly and operate outside of your comfort zone
- Ability to travel in Asia to work face-to-face with contract manufacturers.
Preferred
The ideal candidate would also have experience in the following areas:
- Updated on EV Charger labeling regulations across regions (UL, EU, CE, FCC, etc.).
- Experience collaborating with testing labs to conduct drop, vibration, compression, and climatic tests as required by ISTA procedures.
- Analyze test results to identify failure points and optimize packaging design for improved protection and cost-efficiency.
