Job description

As a Test Technician on Zoox's Base Operations team, you are responsible for the setup, execution, and reporting of tests on Zoox R&D bots, and for keeping the public roads fleet ready for on-road use. This includes planning tests, installing test equipment and sensors, configuring vehicles to desired test states, executing tests per requestor procedures, and performing the maintenance, diagnostics, and repair work that keeps vehicles safe, demo-ready, and test-ready.

Testing spans vehicle performance, crash testing, noise and vibration, thermal performance, durability testing, prototype and procedure validation. You will draw on expertise in one or more of these areas, working closely with the responsible attribute lead and with your team to keep the fleet in a ready state.

Shift: 1st Shift, Tuesday - Saturday, 6:30am - 3pm
Travel Requirements: up to 50%

In this role, you will:
  • Execute vehicle-level test requests with a focus on accuracy and thoroughness; create diagnostic test plans as needed.
  • Work with engineering to select and install appropriate test sensors, and to set up and configure DAQ systems.
  • Support preparation of test parts and update test vehicles as dictated by test requirements; coordinate logistics for vehicles, equipment, and parts.
  • Configure, set up, maintain, diagnose, and sign off on vehicles for safe on-road use; perform vehicle-level inspections, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Perform diagnostics and escalate to the appropriate engineering team when required; coordinate and drive the repair process.
  • Sync with the Shop Foreman to ensure vehicles are ready for demonstration and testing requirements.
  • Execute tests, collect data, and support the analysis, documentation, and reporting of results; maintain service records and quality field reports.
  • Maintain shop and workshop space, tools, and parts inventory to a high professional standard of safety, efficiency, and cleanliness.
  • Build a strong service experience for internal teams and business partners.
  • Qualifications
  • Minimum of 4 years of automotive technician experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of automotive repair and diagnostic procedures, tools, components, and best practices.
  • Strong understanding of electrical theory and application.
  • Experience working with test equipment in one or more areas such as NVH, Vehicle Dynamics, Thermal, Powertrain, Chassis, Restraint Systems, or Durability.
  • Ability to travel locally and nationally, with occasional international travel
  • Reliable, self-starter work ethic; strong ability to multitask across projects and deliverables.
  • Team player with excellent written and verbal communication skills; honest, responsible, and a strong communicator.
  • Ability to pass a background check, MVR (Motor Vehicle Record) check with a valid driver's license and a clean driving record, and drug screen; must comply with the Substance Abuse Policy.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and sit or stand for extended periods (8+ hours) depending on equipment type.
  • Forklift and/or gantry operation required. Zoox provides operator training and Cal/OSHA-compliant certification.
  • Safety Equipment: This role requires safety boots conforming to ASTM F2412 / F2413 standards.
  • Bonus Qualificaitons
  • Experience in an automotive-focused engineering or research lab (for example, Dyno or Battery).
  • Experience with instrumentation, test setup, and DAQ operation.
  • Experience with CAN/LIN, wiring diagrams, wiring repair, and soldering.
  • Experience with vehicle alignments and required adjustments.
  • Experience with ADAS and/or autonomous platforms
  • Ability to tow a car hauler and other large trailers to transport fleet vehicles.
  • Technical trade school certificate or Associate Degree in automotive repair.
  • Ability to mentor and coach teammates.
