ON.energy is building the power infrastructure that makes the AI era possible. As AI demand surges past what the grid and traditional data centers can support, ON.energy provides a new class of power technology proven at gigawatt scale and trusted by the world’s leading cloud and AI companies. Our systems are already deployed across 2.5 GW of hyper-scale campuses, validated by top U.S. national labs, and certified for grid-safe operation by major utilities. With real products in the field, we’re scaling faster than the grid can, transforming power from a bottleneck into a competitive advantage for the companies building the future.

Overview

The Senior Commissioning Engineer serves as the Project Site Lead, providing overall leadership and technical oversight of the commissioning process for ON.energy’s mission-critical, medium-voltage double-conversion UPS systems built on utility-scale BESS equipment (batteries, transformers, PCS, and controls). Leading site-based teams of 10–50 people from installation through commissioning, acceptance testing, and handover to services, the Senior Commissioning Engineer owns critical-path execution, stakeholder communication, and final commissioning sign-off for the site.

This is a senior, high-travel field leadership role for an engineer with deep BESS and power systems expertise who is equally comfortable leading a large multidisciplinary site team, interpreting a complex test plan, and serving as the customer-facing technical authority on site.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Technical Oversight

  • Provide overall leadership and technical oversight of the commissioning process.
  • Manage site-based technical teams of 10–50 people from installation through commissioning and acceptance testing, and facilitate smooth handover to services.
  • Manage site-based workflow in line with critical-path demands, ensuring timely and quality delivery.
  • Train and mentor junior engineers and technicians.

Stakeholder & Project Management

  • Act as the primary point of contact between project stakeholders (Project Managers, Project Engineers, Customers, OEMs, and Vendors).
  • Understand and interpret project-specific task orders, change orders, and MSAs.
  • Develop and follow commissioning plans, test plans, procedures, and schedules.

Technical Execution & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols, grid interconnection requirements, and regulatory standards.
  • Lead root cause analysis (RCA) and high-level troubleshooting for major issues.
  • Provide final commissioning sign-off and documentation.

Required Qualifications

  • Extensive experience in BESS, power systems, control architecture, and commissioning.
  • Strong background in commissioning, system integration, and grid compliance.
  • Proficiency in SCADA systems, communication protocols, and power conversion systems.
  • Leadership and project management experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronics, or other engineering discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Willing and able to travel up to ~80% to project sites nationwide.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Safety certifications (OSHA 30, NFPA 70E, First Aid, CPR, AED).
  • Experience leading large site teams on hyperscale data center or utility-scale BESS projects.
  • Experience with medium-voltage switching and system energization.
  • Familiarity with major BESS OEM platforms and SCADA protocols (DNP3, Modbus, etc).

Soft Skills

  • Strong leadership presence; able to lead large, multidisciplinary site teams.
  • Excellent stakeholder and customer communication.
  • Calm under pressure in schedule-driven environments.
  • Bias toward root-cause resolution, safety, and quality.
