Published December 12, 2022

This post showcases startups and established tech companies that are headquartered in Mountain View. We look first at the most established late stage tech companies in Mountain View like Google and Intuit, then move on to look at Series A and earlier tech companies that are headquartered in the city of Mountain View in Silicon Valley.

Tech Companies and Startups Headquartered in Mountain View

Mountain View, California, located in the heart of Silicon Valley, is home to some of the biggest and most recognized tech, software, and IT companies in the world. The most obvious one is the search engine monopoly Google. Google's massive campus in Mountain View includes more than a dozen buildings and over 7,000 employees but they are not the only game in town. In this post we'll cover the largest tech employers in Mountain View as well as up-and-coming startups that call Mountain View home.

In our dataset of over 11,000 companies we've identified 170 that are headquartered in Mountain View. There definitely are other companies with corporate offices in Mountain View like Gen Digital (formerly known as NortonLifeLock and formerly before that known as Symantec) but this post is only going to showcase companies that have their actual corporate headquarters in the city of Mountain View. To search for tech companies and startups in other cities (map included! 🗺️) you can use our free company search feature. We're also not going to showcase any companies that have been acquired, like Tynker. With those caveats in mind let's get started..

Largest companies headquartered in Mountain View

The largest company in Mountain View is unsurprisingly Google, founded way back in 1998. It has around 100,000 employees globally. They build a search engine, email services, cloud hosting, maps, advertising and analytics services and generally have their fingers in a lot of pies of the American economy.

Next largest is Intuit, founded by two gentlemen back in 1983. Today the company has about 13,000 employees globally and builds financial and tax preparation software for individuals, small businesses, and accountants.

There are two online education behemoths headquartered in Mountain View too. Udacity, founded in 2011, has about 4,000 employees. Coursera, founded in 2012, has about 1,000 employees. Both offer massive open online courses (MOOCs for those old enough to remember the hype) in fields such as artificial intelligence, data science, programming, business and the arts.

Elastic is another large tech company headquartered in Mountain View. They build products for developers and enterprise companies. Specifically they offer open source search, logging, and analytics products, including Elasticsearch and Kibana. They were founded in 2012 and have over 2,000 employees.

SentinelOne, founded in 2013, has about 1,000 employees. They build cybersecurity products and say that "the future of cybersecurity is autonomous". The company looks to be at the intersection of web security and AI.

Quora was founded in 2009 by early CTO of Facebook Adam D'Angelo who still acts as the company's CEO. It has over 200 employees so is considerably smaller than some of the above companies. For those not in the know Quora is a question-and-answer website where users can ask and answer questions on a wide range of topics.

Lacework, was founded more recently in 2015 and has over 200 employees. They also offer cloud security solutions though seem to be more in the security compliance space. From their website it seems they're very into "cloud security".

These are some of the biggest companies in Mountain View. Below is the full list of companies we have in the Employbl database based on number of employees.

These are some of the biggest Mountain View based companies and as you can tell by looking at the latest round column a bunch of them are public, raising money post IPO. Google raised a "Series A" round and then IPO'd in 2004. The rest of these companies have raised later stage capital in the Series B, Series C or later stages.

Next up let's look at some earlier stage companies that haven't gone public and are at the Series A investment stage or earlier.

Early stage startups based in Mountain View, CA

There are lots of good (and bad) reasons to work for early stage startups. Paul Graham has some notes in his blog post early about how to think about early stage startup opportunities. How to decide if working at a startup is right for you is out of scope for this article, but we can help you find startups that are based in Mountain View, the heart of Silicon Valley.

Here are a few hot startups that have raised a bunch of money from top tier Venture Capital firms:

Luminous Computing, founded in 2018, raised a $105 million Series A from investors including Bill Gates. They're a startup that specializes in providing scalable and high-performance computing solutions for businesses. They raised $88 million this year from investors like Lightspeed Venture Partners and GV. They were founded in 2019 and currently have 14 job openings listed on Employbl.

Inworld AI, founded just after the pandemic in 2020 is a startup that focuses on developing immersive realities and Metaverse experiences. They're backed by Kleiner Perkins, Founders Fund and, you guessed it, Meta.

Signal Technology Foundation, founded in 2019, is working to develop "open source privacy technology that protects free expression and enables secure global communication". It operates on $50,000 from it's co-founder Brian Acton.

Relyance AI, founded in 2018, is a startup that uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to help businesses manage user privacy and data governance. It's backed by Menlo Ventures and Unusual Ventures, among others. It's one of the few companies on this list that has a woman co-founder.
