Senior Software Engineer, Frontend - Azul Intelligence Cloud

Job description

Millions of Java developers and the world's top businesses trust Azul to power their applications.

Azul continues to grow, and we are actively looking for a Senior Frontend Engineer to work with us on developing Azul Intelligence Cloud.

This SaaS product connects millions of JVM runtimes, collects and aggregates detailed information, analyzes code use, detects vulnerabilities, and provides code inventory.

We are distributed across the world and offer the flexibility of working from home, as well as the structure of an office environment that focuses on employee wellness and opportunities for professional growth.

Join our team and work alongside Software Engineers, Product Managers, Designers, and QA to build and evolve the web experience of our SaaS platform.

In this role, you'll focus on frontend architecture, design, and hands-on development — implementing new features, improving existing functionality, fixing issues, and participating in reviews and technical discussions. You'll work mostly with React and TypeScript, integrating with our Java-based backend services and owning the Node.js / Fastify BFF layer, working with async processing, and building the data-heavy reporting views that make large-scale analysis usable. The backend services are built in Java by other teams — you won't be developing the Java backend yourself; the server-side code you own is the BFF.

Responsibilities
  • Develop high-quality features and improvements in React and TypeScript, with a strong focus on maintainability and readability.

  • Own features end-to-end across the UI, the BFF, and the async jobs that feed them, integrating with the Java backend services that provide the data.

  • Integrate the UI with backend services, consuming and helping shape their APIs.

  • Participate in design discussions and contribute to technical decisions on UI architecture, state boundaries, and API contracts.

  • Build and maintain BFF endpoints (Node.js / Fastify) where UI-specific data shaping is needed.

  • Design async flows for long-running analyses (BullMQ) — retry-safe, idempotent jobs whose status is clearly reflected in the UI.

  • Make data-heavy reporting views fast and reliable through virtualization, pagination, and pushing heavy aggregation to the backend when appropriate.

  • Use AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude CLI / Claude Code, AI coding assistants) to work efficiently, and apply good judgment about where they help and where they don't.

  • Evaluate trade-offs between solutions while keeping simplicity, cost, stability, and performance in mind.

  • Collaborate closely with the team to break down work, estimate tasks, and deliver incrementally.

  • Collaborate with backend, product, and data teams to ensure smooth integration of features and shared services.

  • Engage actively in code reviews, sharing feedback and ensuring high-quality standards across the team.

  • Keep up with industry trends and suggest practical improvements that fit our context.

Qualifications
  • 7+ years of hands-on frontend development experience, with strong React and TypeScript.

  • Experience owning frontend features end-to-end in a production product, with clear separation of concerns and safe typing across API boundaries.

  • Solid understanding of frontend performance and scalability — re-render costs, virtualization, pagination, and progressive loading.

  • Comfortable working across the frontend/backend boundary — integrating with backend services and designing API contracts.

  • Comfortable working with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude CLI / Claude Code, AI coding assistants) as part of day-to-day development. You should be able to decompose complex engineering tasks, provide effective context and instructions, supervise multi-step agent workflows, critically review generated code, and take full ownership of its correctness, security, testing, and maintainability.

  • Experience with Vite (build configuration, code-splitting, developer experience) is a plus.

  • Experience with SQL/NoSQL databases

  • 3+ years of experience with Node.js and any frameworks (Express/Fastify).
  • Familiarity with async/queue-based workflows, ideally BullMQ (idempotent jobs, retries/DLQ, status-driven UI), is a plus.

  • Experience with analytical/columnar data, ideally DuckDB, and building data-heavy reporting UIs is a plus.

  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines (GitLab) is a plus.

  • Basic understanding of Kubernetes (K8s) and AWS cloud infrastructure is a plus.

  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills; comfortable reading and improving existing codebases.

  • Good communication skills and a collaborative mindset.

  • Bachelor's/Master's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.

What We Offer
  • Referral Program – help us grow with great people.

  • Premium IT Equipment – MacBook Pro or hardware of your choice.

  • Excellent work-life balance, flexible hours, full remote possible.

  • Competitive compensation and benefits package

  • Work alongside top experts worldwide contributing to the Java ecosystem.
