Job description

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the world's most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo’s fully autonomous ride-hail service and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over ten million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving over 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 15+ U.S. states.

We are seeking a passionate Senior Software Engineer to join the Waymo UX Depot team. In this role, you will build client-facing interfaces and core backend infrastructure powering the mobile and web applications that Waymo and enterprise partners use to manage autonomous vehicle fleets. Key responsibilities include enhancing mobile apps for operational personnel, scaling real-time fleet data collection tools, and developing intuitive web views to control complex depot operations.

You will design scalable, highly reliable end-to-end systems that serve as the backbone for mission-critical infrastructure, supporting market expansion while ensuring rigorous data integrity across UI and backend services. While this is primarily a backend role within a frontend-focused team, you will create and update backend services, manage Backends for Frontends (BFF), and establish necessary infrastructure. You should also be comfortable working across the full stack—including frontend code to verify solution accuracy—with training provided as needed.

You will:

  • Build and evolve mission-critical tools and systems that allow Waymo to scale and serve new markets.
  • Solve hard real-world problems related to event / incident response.
  • Collaborate with Product, UX, and other engineers to design and develop internal user-facing products.
  • Ship solutions to novel problems that arise in a fast-paced environment

You have:

  • BS degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
  • 5+ years of backend/infra experience

We prefer:

  • Backend experience in Kotlin, Java, Python, Go, C++ or similar.
  • Familiarity with Google infrastructure (e.g. Borg, Protocol Buffers, Spanner).
  • Experience with engineering artifacts, reliability monitoring and alerting, documentation, integration testing, production hygiene, and support processes.
