POSITION OVERVIEW 

The Lab Technician supports high-quality, efficient patient care by performing specimen collection, processing, point-of-care testing, and other laboratory functions within the pediatric clinic. This role works closely with providers and clinical team members to ensure specimens are collected and handled accurately, testing is completed according to established protocols, and results are appropriately documented and communicated. 

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable working with infants, children, adolescents, and their families in a fast-paced outpatient environment. 

WHAT YOU’LL DO 

Laboratory & Specimen Collection 

• Collect blood, urine, swabs, and other specimens from pediatric patients in accordance with established clinical protocols. 
• Perform pediatric and adolescent phlebotomy using age-appropriate techniques to promote patient comfort and safety. 
• Properly label, process, store, and prepare specimens for in-house testing or transport to external laboratories. 
• Perform approved point-of-care and waived laboratory testing in accordance with clinic policies and CLIA requirements. 
• Ensure laboratory specimens and test results are accurately documented within the electronic medical record (EMR). 
• Monitor pending laboratory orders and assist with ensuring specimens and results are appropriately tracked. 

Quality, Safety & Compliance 

• Follow all laboratory safety, infection prevention, OSHA, CLIA, and HIPAA requirements. 
• Complete required quality-control procedures and maintain accurate laboratory documentation and logs. 
• Monitor laboratory supplies, testing materials, and expiration dates and communicate replenishment needs. 
• Maintain clean, organized, and appropriately stocked laboratory and specimen collection areas. 
• Identify specimen quality concerns or testing issues and escalate appropriately. 

Patient & Team Support 

• Create a calm, supportive experience for pediatric patients and families during specimen collection and testing. 
• Explain laboratory procedures to patients and caregivers in an age-appropriate and reassuring manner. 
• Partner closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, medical assistants, and other clinical team members to support efficient patient flow. 
• Assist with additional clinical support responsibilities within scope of practice and training as needed. 

WHAT YOU’LL NEED  

• High school diploma or GED required; completion of an accredited phlebotomy, medical laboratory, or related clinical training program preferred. 
• 1+ years of laboratory, phlebotomy, or clinical experience preferred, ideally within a pediatric, primary care, family medicine, or urgent care setting. 
• Previous phlebotomy and specimen collection experience required; pediatric phlebotomy experience strongly preferred. 
• Experience performing point-of-care or CLIA-waived testing preferred. 
• Current phlebotomy, laboratory, or other applicable certification preferred or required based on state regulations and scope of practice. 
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred. 
• Knowledge of specimen collection, handling, processing, infection prevention, and laboratory safety practices. 
• Experience with electronic medical records (EMR) and laboratory systems preferred. 
• Strong attention to detail with a commitment to accuracy, quality, and patient safety. 
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to create a positive and reassuring experience for pediatric patients and their caregivers. 
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative clinical environment and comfortably support infants, children, and adolescents of varying ages and developmental needs.
