Job Description

At January, we work to ensure that borrowers who fall behind on debt are treated with fairness and respect. Owing to outdated processes and bad actors, traditional debt collection is rife with harassment and fraud. Our products tackle this by helping financial institutions modernize collections, giving borrowers simpler and more compassionate ways to get back on track.

About the Engineering Team Lead Role:

At January, the Borrower Activation Team pioneers a compassionate approach to debt resolution, crafting a journey that transitions borrowers to payers with dignity. We’re driven by innovation, aiming to dismantle barriers and redefine the experience with tailored, empowering solutions. Our focus is not just on recovery but on fostering financial empowerment and literacy, making each interaction an opportunity for growth and understanding. In this role you will:

  • Engineer Personalized Experiences: Spearhead the engineering of dynamic, personalized borrower portals that adapt to each user's unique circumstances, delivering a sense of understanding and respect for their financial situation.
  • Design with Flexibility in Mind: Craft flexible repayment options that recognize the diverse financial realities of our borrowers, extending the accessibility and inclusivity of our platform.
  • Champion Mobile Accessibility: Lead the charge in mobile-first design, ensuring that our solutions are not just accessible but delightful to use on any device, anywhere, at any time.
  • Foster Collaborative Innovation: Collaborate closely with Compliance and Customer Success to weave compliance seamlessly into user-friendly designs, bridging the gap between legal obligations and user needs.

Your Impact:

  • Team Leadership and Strategy: As a Team Lead, you play a crucial role in guiding your team, setting technical directions, and making high-impact decisions in collaboration with product managers, designers, and engineers. Your leadership ensures alignment with the company's objectives, influencing not only your immediate team but also contributing to the broader engineering vision.
  • Technical Excellence: You champion quality and maintain high standards in software development. This includes developing solutions, conducting code reviews, and managing technical debt. Your goal is to ensure the codebase is robust, scalable, and adheres to the highest quality standards.
  • Developing Peers: You actively contribute to the growth of your team by sharing knowledge, conducting code reviews, and supporting their professional development. Your leadership fosters a culture of learning and growth, enhancing the collective expertise of the team.
  • People Management: You conduct regular 1:1 meetings, provide constructive feedback, and create a psychologically safe environment for your team. You are involved in the performance review process and play a significant role in the hiring decisions, ensuring the team remains aligned and motivated.

What You Bring to the Table:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Software Engineer, with significant experience leading projects and or managing people.
  • Proficiency in at least one modern programming language (Java, Python, Go, etc.).
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • A passion for collaboration and a proven ability to work well with cross-functional teams.
  • Full-stack experience is a must.

Our compensation range for the Team Lead role is $160,000 to $210,000, determined by experience, education, and skills. This role also includes a competitive equity package.

January is dedicated to closing the wage gap and offers transparent and equitable compensation packages to all team members.
