Hex is building the infrastructure for on-demand aerial data. We design and manufacture drone-in-a-box systems that automate repetitive drone operations, taking humans out of the loop so the people who depend on aerial data can move faster. The Role

As an Embedded Firmware Engineer, you'll own the firmware that makes Hex hardware work. You'll write code for resource-constrained microcontrollers, bring up new boards, and debug your own firmware against real hardware with a scope in hand. Because you understand both the code and the circuit it runs on, you'll be the person who resolves the problems that fall between them. This is a hands-on role on a small team, and your firmware ships to systems operating in the field within months.

Responsibilities

• Own firmware development for Hex's drone and dock platforms across bare metal and RTOS environments

• Bring up new hardware: board power-on, peripheral validation, and debug against schematic and layout

• Diagnose firmware and hardware interaction issues independently using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other bench instrumentation

• Read schematics, board layouts, and datasheets directly, and account for electrical and physical constraints in your code

• Write and execute test and validation procedures for development and production firmware

• Serve as the first point of contact for the software and hardware teams on integration and testing of the firmware you build

• Drive root cause analysis on firmware and hardware-interaction issues

• Contribute to architecture decisions where the firmware, electrical, and software boundaries meet

Requirements

• Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field

• Professional experience writing firmware for resource-constrained targets: bare metal and RTOS environments, anything more constrained than Linux. We're targeting 2 to 5 years, and we'll consider earlier-career candidates who show exceptional promise.

• Proficiency in C and C++ for embedded development

• Hands-on experience with STM32 or comparable microcontrollers: peripheral configuration, clock and power management, and debugging

• Literacy in circuit analysis. You can read a schematic, a board layout, and a datasheet without hand-holding, and you understand the electrical consequences of your code.

• Independent use of electrical test equipment to diagnose bring-up and integration problems

• Evidence of hands-on building outside formal work: side projects, competition teams, or self-taught depth

• Based in Miami or willing to relocate. This role is on-site.

Nice to Have

• Firmware on a product that shipped to customers, not only development boards

• Experience with low-power, long-range protocols like LoRa and Wi-Fi HaLow

• Hardware-in-the-loop or automated test rig development

• Motor control or power electronics firmware

• Exposure to FCC and equivalent international regulatory testing from the firmware side

• Comfort reading Altium schematics and layouts

• UAV, robotics, aerospace, or defense industry background
