Position Overview:
Velo3D is seeking a highly experienced Assistant Controller / Director of Accounting to serve as a key member of the Controllership organization and a strategic partner to the Senior Director, Corporate Controller.
This role will have broad responsibility across accounting operations, technical accounting, financial close, internal controls/SOX/ICFR, external audit, SEC reporting support, and process improvement.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on accounting leader who can operate effectively in a public-company environment, independently resolve complex accounting issues, strengthen the control environment, and drive execution across the accounting organization.
This position is expected to serve as a key right hand to the Corporate Controller, providing both day-to-day leadership and senior-level technical and operational support.
Responsibilities
Accounting Operations & Financial Close
- Partner with the Corporate Controller to lead and oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close activities; ensuring timely and accurate financial statements.
- Perform detailed review of accounting operations, reconciliations, journal entries, reserves, and flux analysis.
- Strengthen accounting processes, policies, procedures, and documentation.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field.
- Active CPA license is strongly preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including significant public-company or public-accounting experience.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
- Demonstrated experience with accounting operations and end-to-end financial close.
- Experience with SEC reporting and external audits.
- Strong technical accounting and research capabilities.
- Hands-on experience with SOX 404 / internal controls and control remediation.
- Experience evaluating complex or non-routine business transactions.
- Strong understanding of revenue recognition, including ASC 606.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, project-management, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize competing deadlines, and operate effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with senior management and cross-functional business partners.
Preferred Qualifications
- Big Four public accounting experience.
- Public-company experience in technology, manufacturing, hardware, software, SaaS, or life sciences.
- Experience remediating material weaknesses or significant deficiencies.
- Experience with ASC 842, equity compensation, debt, business combinations, or other complex accounting areas.
- Experience with ERP implementations or accounting-system transformations.
- Experience with SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Workiva, DFIN or similar accounting/reporting platforms.
- Experience managing and developing accounting professionals.
- Demonstrated ability to combine technical accounting expertise with hands-on operational execution.

First 90 Days
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of Velo3D’s accounting organization, processes, systems, controls, and reporting requirements.
- Establish clear ownership and backup coverage for critical accounting processes.
- Assess close, reconciliation, technical accounting, SOX, SEC reporting, equity, and audit processes and identify key risks and improvement opportunities.
- Establish strong working relationships with Controllership, FP&A, Legal, Sales, Operations, external auditors, and external advisors.
- Begin driving remediation of identified control and process gaps.
First 6 Months
- Strengthen the monthly and quarterly close process.
- Improve documentation and accountability across key accounting processes.
- Establish a sustainable and well-documented SOX/ICFR framework.
- Drive progress on material weakness remediation.
- Provide reliable technical accounting and transaction support to the business.
- Improve coordination between accounting operations, SEC reporting, Legal, external auditors, and external advisors.
- Reduce key-person dependency through documented processes and effective backup coverage.
First 12 Months
- Establish a stronger, scalable public-company controllership organization.
- Improve close efficiency, accounting process quality, and control effectiveness.
- Successfully support quarterly and annual SEC reporting and external audit requirements.
- Achieve meaningful progress toward remediation of material weaknesses and strengthening of the overall control environment.
- Establish a sustainable operating model that appropriately balances internal capabilities with external advisory support.
- Serve as a trusted senior accounting partner and effective right hand to the Corporate Controller.
