Construction Supervisor - Civil

Tatu City, Kiambu County, Kenya
Job description

The role involves the direct on-site supervision of all civil and structural works, from earthworks and foundations to superstructure and finishing trades. Responsibilities include managing the daily activities of contractors and subcontractors, ensuring adherence to safety and quality protocols, monitoring progress against the schedule, and resolving site-based technical issues.

The position requires a seasoned construction professional with a deep, practical understanding of construction means and methods, strong leadership skills, and an unwavering commitment to safety and quality. The Construction Supervisor will be a critical link between the construction management team and the workforce, responsible for translating plans and drawings into a high-quality physical product.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. On-Site Supervision & Execution Management:

  • Provide direct, hands-on supervision of all civil and structural construction activities on a daily basis, including earthworks, foundations, reinforced concrete works, structural steel, and masonry.
  • Manage and coordinate the daily work of multiple subcontractors and direct labor, ensuring that all teams are working efficiently and collaboratively.
  • Monitor site productivity and progress against the weekly and daily work plans, proactively identifying and resolving any issues that may impact the schedule.
  • Interpret construction drawings, specifications, and method statements to ensure that all works are executed correctly and in full compliance with the design.

2. Quality Control & Assurance:

  • Act as the frontline enforcer of the project's quality standards, conducting continuous inspections of workmanship and materials.
  • Raise formal inspection requests for all completed works and coordinate with the Field Engineer and QA/QC team to ensure timely approvals.
  • Identify and report any non-conforming works, ensuring that corrective actions are implemented and documented promptly by the contractor.
  • Ensure that all materials delivered to the site meet the approved specifications and are stored correctly.

3. Health, Safety & Environment (HSE):

  • Champion a culture of safety on-site, leading by example and enforcing all project HSE rules and regulations without compromise.
  • Conduct daily site safety walks (Toolbox Talks) and ensure that all workers are equipped with the correct PPE and are following safe work procedures.
  • Review contractor's method statements and risk assessments, particularly for high-risk activities like excavation, lifting operations, and working at height.
  • Immediately report and respond to any safety incidents or near-misses, and assist in the investigation to determine the root cause.

4. Reporting & Coordination:

  • Prepare accurate daily and weekly site reports, detailing the progress of works, resource allocation (manpower and equipment), and any delays or challenges encountered.
  • Maintain a detailed site diary, recording all key events, instructions, and weather conditions.
  • Liaise closely with the Structural Field Engineer to resolve technical queries and ensure that all works are approved before proceeding.
  • Coordinate with the project surveyors to ensure that all works are set out and constructed to the correct lines and levels.

Requirements

  • Education: A diploma or higher national diploma in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related building trade is essential. A bachelor's degree is an advantage.
  • Experience: A minimum of 10-15 years of direct, hands-on experience in a construction supervision role (e.g., Foreman, General Foreman, Site Superintendent) on large-scale building or infrastructure projects.
  • Industry Background: Extensive experience working for a major main contractor is mandatory.
  • Technical Proficiency: Expert practical knowledge of construction means, methods, and materials. Must have deep expertise in formwork systems, rebar fixing, concrete pouring and curing, and general construction site logistics.
  • Drawing Interpretation: Must be highly skilled in reading and interpreting complex civil and structural construction drawings and translating them into clear instructions for the workforce.
