Position Overview:

Solid Power is seeking a Cell Validation Engineering Manager to join our talented team working to revolutionize the battery industry through the development of next-generation, all solid-state rechargeable batteries. Solid Power is a dynamic, fast-paced, collaborative team environment. This position will work closely with the cell development team, testing team & external labs to help in the execution of battery cell test plans to qualify Solid Power’s solid state battery technology.

Job Duties:

  • Serve as the team leader for cell validation at Solid Power. Mentor existing members and expand the capabilities of the team.
  • Coordinate within cell technologies to develop validation plans and protocols to qualify small and large format solid state lithium cells. This includes electrochemical performance, cycle life, EIS, abuse testing, etc.
  • Support the cell testing team and follow the tests through completion.
  • Analyze and evaluate test data, drawing conclusions and recommendations.
  • Interface with customers to understand and manage external requirements, ensuring that validation plans align with customer specifications and industry standards.
  • Prepare detailed validation reports and present them to key stakeholders and external customers.
  • Serve as a point of contact for external test labs conducting abuse & electrical tests.
  • Support cell development activities through collaboration and feedback with cell design and other teams.
  • Participate in and lead DFMEA sessions to identify potential failure modes, assess risks, and implement mitigation strategies to ensure the reliability and safety of battery cells.
  • Develop and maintain traceability matrices to ensure all customer and regulatory requirements are met throughout the validation process.
  • Use the company’s document and change control system to properly archive technical documentation.

Qualifications/ Requirements:

  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree in electrochemistry or chemical/mechanical/material science engineering required. Master’s degree or higher strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of industry experience in testing and validation of Lithium ion/Lithium battery cells including battery performance metrics, cycle life, temperature effects, degradation mechanisms and failure modes. Candidates with battery physics/chemistry backgrounds and familiarity with solid-state battery technology and the unique challenges associated with its validation and testing are strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and its application in battery testing and diagnostics.
  • Proficiency in using battery testing equipment such as Arbin, Maccor, and other industry standard instrumentation.
  • Experience in designing and conducting abuse testing protocols for lithium battery cells, including overcharge, over-discharge, short circuit, and thermal runaway tests, with a focus on ensuring safety and reliability under extreme conditions. Familiarity with industry standards and regulations governing lithium battery testing and validation.
  • Experience with systems engineering principles and methodologies, including requirements management, system design, integration, and verification. Proficiency in using DFMEA tools and techniques to systematically evaluate potential failure modes and their effects on system performance is highly desired.
  • Experience in statistical analysis and data interpretation techniques for deriving meaningful insights from test results would be ideal.
  • Proven track record of managing relationships with customers and external test labs and ensuring timely and accurate execution of test programs.
  • In-depth knowledge of Excel functionality including VBA macro management for automating tasks, application of statistical functions, and SharePoint/OneDrive integrations. Familiarity with Azure database management, how to query information into excel, and writing tests to routinely validate automated queries. An ideal candidate would have some experience using Microsoft’s new Python in Excel.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical findings and recommendations to diverse stakeholders, including external customers.
  • Detail-oriented approach to documentation management, with experience in using document and change control systems.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting.
  • Ability to work in a dry room environment and wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as necessary including, but not limited to eye protection, hair net, gloves, face mask, and coveralls.

Salary Range: $108,000 - $155,000 annually
