Job Description

At Pattern Bioscience, we’re tackling antibiotic resistance, one of the biggest public health challenges of our time.  We use machine learning and microfluidics to quickly recognize the bacteria causing an infection and to predict which drugs will cure the infection.

We are looking for a Sr. Controls Engineer who loves developing automated controls and solving problems for our startup manufacturing facility. Pattern needs to develop custom equipment and fixturing to produce our consumable that will improve efficiencies, reduce downtime, and increase throughput. You will design and develop controls as well as commission and qualify new equipment. As a core member of the Consumable Automation & Engineering team, you’ll collaborate with Production and Operations as well as other engineering teams.

Goals

  • 90 day
    • Review and provide recommended changes to existing production equipment
    • Implement an updated laser weld fixture to improve quality and operator ease of use
  • 6 month
    • Implement a new wash fixture to reduce scrap and improve quality

How You Will Contribute

  • Develop a thorough understanding of current equipment and machine controls used in our manufacturing processes to improve quality, process, or throughput.
  • Lead equipment troubleshooting and problem solving.
  • Write or provide technical input for project scope development and execution for new equipment user requirements specifications.
  • Design and develop engineering controls and programming of I/O hardware and sensors, drives, PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, vision systems, and robot controllers.
  • Develop and execute FATs, SATs, and validation plans for new or updated equipment and control systems.
  • Create and update P&IDs, wiring schematics and I/O drawings for controls systems.
  • Design, detail, and implement networking systems used to connect control system components, instrumentation, and SCADA system interfaces and databases using industrial protocols.
  • Develop work instructions and O&M manuals, and train operators on the proper use of equipment, HMIs, and SCADA interfaces.

  • Are an independent and creative problem solver who appreciates a hands-on environment.
  • Commit to clean, minimal, and readable code practices, including the use of data structures, enumerations, function blocks, and Hungarian notation.
  • Can create detailed documentation, including user requirement specifications, P&IDs, wiring schematics, I/O drawings, work instructions, and O&M manuals.
  • Have experience running DOEs to improve product quality and process efficiency.
  • Excel at organization and driving projects to meet timelines and schedules including working with external contractors.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, across technical disciplines.
  • Bring emotional intelligence to foster collaboration and team success.
  • Are analytical and data-driven in your approach and recommendations.

Desired Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering with 7+ years’ of experience in the design, development, documentation, and implementation of automated production equipment
  • Proficient in PLC, HMI, SCADA, vision systems, and robot controls programming
  • Expert in PLC software development using Structured Text
  • Familiar with State Machine standards, such as PackML

Skills or Attributes Considered a Plus

  • Experience in an FDA regulated environment
  • Experience with Omron PLC controls
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001
  • Knowledge of ANSI and NEC safety standards
  • Proficient in SolidWorks
