Position Summary:

The Social Media Content Creator produces timely, engaging, social-first content that helps KQED connect with Bay Area audiences across Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. Working within Audience Development, this role develops original short-form vertical videos and static assets from concept through completion. This role sits outside the newsroom and is not a reporting or journalism position.

The ideal candidate is a creative, collaborative storyteller with a strong understanding of audience behavior who always has an eye on the latest social trends. They are comfortable pitching ideas, writing scripts, filming and editing casual videos, designing static assets in Canva, and occasionally appearing on camera.

This role will focus on creating social content about life in the Bay Area and putting it through a KQED lens. This includes adapting the right social trends to be brand-aligned, curating stories from kqed.org, and executing original ideas that help audiences discover more of the Bay Area and feel more connected to the region, the people, and the culture.

KQED envisions a public media organization with a culture that centers on human dignity, equity, and belonging. This will enable us to better serve and reflect the Bay Area through diverse and inclusive storytelling.

We value the contributions of marginalized people in society — including Black, Indigenous, and all people of color,  people with disabilities, and LGBTQIA+ people — and we believe that these communities must be centered in the work we do, and we strongly encourage members of these communities to apply.

We help students and teachers thrive in 21st-century classrooms, and take people of all ages on journeys of exploration- exposing them to new people, places and ideas.

This role will work hybrid between working in KQED's newly renovated headquarters and working remotely.

Essential Functions:

  • Produce 1 - 2 social-first vertical videos per week for KQED's Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook including ideation, scripting, filming, editing, and delivery.
  • Create 2 - 3 static social assets per week for KQED’s Instagram and Facebook, adapting relevant kqed.org content and other editorial content into compelling social-first formats such as single-slide graphics and carousels
  • Edit static and video assets using Canva and CapCut Pro in accordance with KQED's brand and editorial guidelines
  • Write scripts, captions, headlines, and other concise audience-facing copy in KQED's brand voice for each individual platform
  • Occasionally appear on camera for casual social videos

  • Develop and refine repeatable social video formats that can be produced consistently and adapted to different topics, platforms, and audience interests
  • Support scheduling and publishing of content on an as-needed basis, ensuring captions, tags, links, and other platform elements are accurate
  • Support audience engagement by monitoring comments,  surfacing relevant feedback to the Audience Development team, and identifying audience responses that could serve as inspiration for future content
  • Review performance insights provided by the Audience Development team and use them to refine creative approaches, formats, hooks, CTAs, and future content ideas
  • Maintain organized content assets, production calendar records, and status updates in internal systems, while proactively communicating deadlines, needs, and potential delays
  • Stay current on social media industry news and trends, and identify relevant opportunities for KQED to participate in
  • Collaborate with Audience Development, Digital Video, News, Marketing, Events, and other teams on social content
  • Knowledge/Experience Required:
  • At least three years of professional experience creating social media content, including digital video
  • A portfolio or social media work samples demonstrating strong short-form video storytelling for platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube
  • Experience developing content from idea through execution, including research, scripting, filming, editing, and delivery

  • Strong writing and editing skills, including the ability to explain ideas clearly and write concise copy for different platforms and audiences
  • Sound editorial judgment and a demonstrated commitment to accuracy, cultural sensitivity, and responsible storytelling
  • Working knowledge of the formats, features, trends, and audience behaviors that shape Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple assignments, production schedules, and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with cross-functional partners
