Job description

Senior Accountant, CPA

Part-Time | Remote | Independent Contractor (1099)

💰 $60–$75/hour | Approximately 40 hours/month | Fully Remote | U.S.-Based

Backpack Healthcare is growing, and we’re looking for an experienced CPA to join our team as a part-time Senior Accountant and take ownership of our monthly close and financial reporting process.

This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced accounting professional who enjoys autonomy, flexibility, and meaningful work without the commitment of a full-time role.

You’ll step into an established accounting environment with documented procedures, reconciled accounts, organized records, and a structured month-end close process. This is not a bookkeeping cleanup project — you’ll be responsible for maintaining the integrity of our financial statements and providing accurate, timely financial reporting to executive leadership and external stakeholders.

🎒 About Backpack Healthcare

Backpack Healthcare is a school-based pediatric behavioral health company providing therapy and psychiatry services across multiple states. We’re committed to making high-quality behavioral healthcare more accessible to children, adolescents, young adults, and their families.

As our Senior Accountant, you’ll play an important behind-the-scenes role in helping ensure our financial operations remain accurate, efficient, and well-supported as we continue to grow.

What You’ll Do

You’ll independently manage our recurring accounting and month-end close responsibilities, including:

  • Own the monthly close process from start to finish
  • Review and code daily bank and credit card transactions in QuickBooks Online
  • Record semimonthly payroll journal entries based on payroll provider reports
  • Prepare and record journal entries, accruals, and other accounting adjustments
  • Complete balance sheet reconciliations and supporting schedules
  • Review financial activity for accuracy, completeness, and appropriate accounting treatment
  • Prepare monthly Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, and Statement of Cash Flows
  • Maintain accounting workpapers and close documentation
  • Support year-end audit requests and schedules
  • Occasionally review new grants, contracts, or funding agreements to determine appropriate accounting treatment and reporting requirements
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and increase efficiency

What Your Schedule Looks Like

This role is designed to provide maximum flexibility with a predictable monthly scope of work.

The engagement is approximately 40 hours per month, with most work concentrated around:

  • 🧾 Daily: Brief transaction review and sync in QuickBooks Online
  • 💵 Twice monthly: Payroll journal entries
  • 📊 Month-end: Monthly close and financial reporting

The monthly close should be completed within the first week of the following month, but you’ll have flexibility in how you manage those hours. Evening and weekend work is completely acceptable when it fits your schedule.

As you become familiar with our systems and processes, we anticipate the close becoming increasingly efficient.

What We’re Looking For

Required Qualifications

  • Active CPA license in good standing in any U.S. state
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • Demonstrated experience independently managing month-end close
  • Strong knowledge of accrual-based accounting and U.S. GAAP
  • Advanced proficiency with QuickBooks Online
  • Experience preparing complete financial statements
  • Strong account reconciliation and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • U.S.-based

Preferred Qualifications

  • Healthcare industry experience, particularly behavioral health, medical practice, or healthcare services
  • Grant accounting experience
  • Contract revenue accounting experience
  • Experience supporting external audits
  • Previous experience as a fractional or contract accountant for a growth-stage organization

Why You’ll Love This Opportunity

Flexible & Remote — Work from anywhere in the U.S. with a schedule that works for you.

Part-Time Commitment — Approximately 40 hours per month, making this a great fit for a fractional accountant, consultant, or accounting professional seeking an ongoing engagement.

📚 Established Processes — Step into organized books, reconciled accounts, documented procedures, and a defined close process.

🎯 Meaningful Ownership — You’ll own the close and financial reporting process rather than simply supporting pieces of it.

🤝 Minimal Administrative Overhead — Limited meetings, minimal supervision, and the ability to focus on the work.

📈 Meaningful Impact — Help support a growing behavioral healthcare organization without taking on a full-time workload.

What This Role Does Not Include

To keep the scope focused, this position does not include:

  • Bookkeeping cleanup or catch-up projects
  • Investor reporting
  • Fundraising support
  • Ownership of budgeting or forecasting
  • Payroll processing or running payroll
  • Accounts payable processing
  • Direct staff management

Compensation & Engagement

$60–$75 per hour, based on experience, healthcare accounting background, and depth of close and audit experience.

This is an independent contractor (1099) engagement with no benefits. The anticipated scope is approximately 40 hours per month, billed monthly. Any additional project work will be agreed upon in advance.

Ready to Make an Impact?

If you’re a seasoned CPA looking for a flexible, autonomous, and ongoing fractional accounting opportunity, we’d love to hear from you!
