Job Description
ABOUT US:
Volta Labs is an applications company that is revolutionizing the future of genomics. We are a Boston based, venture-backed biotech startup that makes extracting vital information from biological samples is as simple as pressing a button, through our flagship product Callisto. Our product speeds up processing time for scientists and increases accessibility to important genetic information for patients. Sitting at the intersection of science and engineering, we invite you to join us on our journey to shape the future of genomics, where insatiable curiosity is encouraged and every Voltarian makes an impact.
THE TEAM:
You'll join a team of innovative thinkers who love to experiment, collaborate, and win together. We are passionate about pushing the boundaries of automation, biology, computing, robotics, design, and user experience to benefit our customers and the world.

The Role:
We’re a startup delivering our Instrument and platform to early-adopting customers this year. We’re choosing to manufacture in-house instead of contracting it out overseas to ensure quality and allow us to keep experimenting.
The Manufacturing Assembly Technician is a key member of the Manufacturing team, and will be literally assembling, calibrating, and testing our Instrument from top to bottom. It’s a fairly repetitive role, and for someone who likes the challenge of piecing together a big puzzle every day that involves moderately difficult electromechanical systems, combined with the knowledge that your hands are building the tech of the future, it will be a great fit.
This role requires attendance during normal working hours between 9-5, 5 days a week in the Boston Seaport area.
Day to Day and Year 1
  • Building the Instrument, Testing, Calibrating, and performing Quality checks
  • Packaging and shipping the machine to customer labs
  • Add support building the consumables (simpler assembly, but more dextrous work) during downtime
  • Within 3 months you’ll
  • Complete onboarding, understand the product
  • Be able to competently build, calibrate, and test with little to no oversight
  • By 6 months you’ll
  • Have built and shipped an Instrument to a customer, and be participating in logistics improvement cycles.
  • You will be authoring new and updating existing SOPs.
  • You will also begin to be knowledgeable enough to facilitate debugging and testing machines in use at customer sites or within our internal development lab.
  • At 12+ months you’ll
  • Actively support the growth of the Manufacturing team.
  • Start stepping into a larger role as you mentor the junior technicians.
  • Contribute to continuous process improvements
  • Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required. Associates Degree or other 2-year technical diploma preferred OR 5+ years of military training and experience testing, and troubleshooting of large military platforms to be considered in lieu of technical diploma.
  • 1-2+ years experience in a manufacturing environment that involves assembling products with any combination of electronics, robotics, or mechanical components
  • Physical Requirement: Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, work while standing for extended periods and be comfortable bending, leaning, reaching, and working in and around machinery as part of daily job duties.
  • Experience debugging and repairing electrical components using soldering irons and multimeters.
  • Must be proficient with electrical reworks such as cable repairs, and surface mount and through hole PCB reworks.
  • Must use and understand the application of common hand tools, various industry nomenclatures, and have strong assembly skills.
  • Must be a self-starter who looks for ways to improve the job and related processes and shows initiative in execution.
  • Working knowledge of spreadsheets, creating, manipulating, and using for data analysis.
  • Demonstrated proficiency developing work instructions, documenting testing procedures and processes.
  • Ability to Self-manage your day-to-day areas with minimal supervision, while completing tasks with high quality output and timely delivery
  • Familiarity with ERP and PLM software is a nice-to-have that supports future projects this role will own.
  • Everything You Need, One Platform.
