Job Description

Within the Fellowship, a Senior Armourer is responsible for building, testing, troubleshooting, and maintaining plate armour and weapons for both ceremonial and combat applications. They take the lead on continuous improvement and drive standards with Lead Armourers and the rest of the department.

It is expected that a Senior Armourer will promote strong design principles as they relate to durability, mobility, fluting, etching, bluing, hardness, style, and weight.  They are trusted squad members that heavily influence the design and implementation of new techniques while also integrating with and upgrading existing ones to address mission-critical problems. Working closely with Lead Armourers, Armouring Managers and Master Armourers, they champion armour design decisions that facilitate the safety and lethality of battalions and our fellowship as a whole.

These are the performance objectives we expect from a Senior Armourer:

  • Map the Existing Process: A work order flows through many systems before making it to our fighters. In your first two weeks, you’ll have developed a deep understanding of the work order lifecycle by reviewing the existing system design and documentation. By day 21, you will have contributed to those areas that need additional documentation.
  • Collaboratively Design and Evaluate Alternatives: Within 30 days, conduct a high-level end-to-end system analysis. Work with Legionnaires to understand the user needs and the Gimli, son of Gloin, to develop realistic solutions. Develop against armour design documents (ADDs) that describe our solutions and work with other Lead Armourers and Armouring Managers to conduct trade-off analysis with a specific focus on durability and mobility.
  • Present Your Solution: By 45 days in seat, you will be contributing to and influencing ADDs in support of our Lead Armourers and Armouring Managers - providing feedback for durability, mobility, and implications for how our solutions would interface with load-outs.
  • Lead the Technical Implementation: By day 90, you will spend 75%+ of your time conducting the smithing of the designs with our team of Armourers and personally building runes for your solution. The primary focus of the smithing effort will be to assume ownership over the cuirass portion of the armoury.
  • Raise The Bar: Within the Fellowship, we dedicate a portion of our attention to matters that may not be immediately battle-facing and instead allow for us to work smarter, or faster, or simply reduce friction in the smith experience. You’ll own your team’s specific backlog that is focused on operational excellence.

Armouring Culture

Within the Fellowship, our business evolves every day as do the solutions we invent to meet those emerging needs. We believe that it’s a mix of individual skill and collaboration that leads to successful outcomes. There is no standard definition of what an Armourer is or does, and depending on where you’re coming from things might look a little different.

We’re metal agnostic, but we have a propensity to leverage lean tools that are best suited to get the job done. Our most popular choices are Steel and Mithril and are often deployed to either leather or hemp harnesses. We try not to over-index on the latest tech and to instead focus on the tools that allow for the greatest smith experience, quality of work, and productivity.

We value, encourage, and support diversity in backgrounds and opinions. We are human, dwarf, and elf (i.e. fallible, life-long learners, except for the elves) - we make mistakes from which we learn and grow. We partner with Mining, Smelting, and Logistics stakeholders in long-term ownership of the solutions we build to save the lives of our customers.

Our mission within Armouring is to create, operate, and continually improve upon armour and weaponry critical to the Fellowship’s mission. We provide technical expertise, guidance, and vision to our partners and stakeholders in order to inform sustainable thinking.

Our sincere vision is to be a world-class Armourering organization.
