Stripe has 117 open engineering roles right now. Airwallex has 157. Sezzle has 145. AlphaSense has 132. I run Employbl, and when I ranked every fintech company in our dataset by active engineering listings, the top of the leaderboard wasn't the logos people assume — it was cross-border payments and market-data companies most candidates have never put on a shortlist.
Fintech is the second-largest hiring sector in all of tech right now: 10,492 active listings across 4,103 companies, behind only developer tools at 14,186. That's the headline most industry roundups stop at. The useful part is where the engineering hiring actually happens inside that sector — because it's not where the brand recognition is.
Scope before the leaderboard: "out-hire" here means more open engineering listings on the company's own ATS boards right now — a snapshot of growth-phase hiring appetite, not organization size. Stripe's engineering org remains far larger than any of the three companies ahead of it on this list. And our index covers companies hiring through Greenhouse, Lever, and Ashby — startup- and scaleup-heavy by construction — so Big Tech internal boards and LinkedIn-only employers aren't in these counts.
The fintech engineering leaderboard, July 2026
Active engineering listings — titles matching engineer or developer — at the fintech companies we track, as of July 16, 2026:
- Airwallex — 157
- Sezzle — 145
- AlphaSense — 132
- Stripe — 117
- OKX — 93
- Affirm — 90
- Xsolla — 80
- Brex — 69
- Adyen — 60
- Coinbase — 56
- Robinhood — 54
- Nubank — 48
Three companies out-post Stripe, and none of them is a US consumer household name. Airwallex builds cross-border payments infrastructure; Sezzle is buy-now-pay-later; AlphaSense sells market intelligence to financial firms. Down the list the pattern holds: B2B money movement (Airwallex, Adyen), point-of-sale credit (Sezzle, Affirm), crypto (OKX, Coinbase), game-commerce payments (Xsolla), and Brazil's Nubank. The famous names — Stripe, Brex, Robinhood, Coinbase — are all still hiring, just at lower volume than the infrastructure companies underneath them. If your fintech shortlist is the logos from 2021, you're aiming at the smaller half of the market.
Why these three lead — and why it might not hold

Start free trial →Company by company, the listings suggest a phase, not a ranking of destiny — read these as hypotheses, not certainties:
- Airwallex — the listings suggest a cross-border expansion phase: every new market means new payment methods, compliance regimes, and banking integrations, and that work lands as engineering reqs.
- Sezzle — the pattern reads as BNPL scaling: point-of-sale credit grows merchant by merchant, and 145 open engineering roles is what that build-out looks like on an ATS board.
- AlphaSense — the hiring profile suggests an AI-search product build-out on top of its market-intelligence base.
- Stripe — by contrast, the listings read as a mature platform extending rather than land-grabbing. 117 openings is still a lot of hiring; it's just not expansion-phase hiring.
And the reason it might not hold: hiring bursts end. A leaderboard like this is a quarter's snapshot of appetite — Airwallex's 157 tells you where the growth is today, not where it will be in two quarters. That's an argument for checking the live counts before you apply, not for treating this list as fixed.
How big is fintech engineering hiring in 2026?
By our count, fintech is the #2 sector in the entire dataset: 4,103 companies with 10,492 active listings, second only to developer tools and infrastructure at 14,186. That combination — deep but concentrated — is what makes a targeted search work here. The sector is big enough to offer real choice, and top-heavy enough that researching the twelve companies above already covers roughly 1,100 open engineering roles.
For a candidate, the practical meaning of #2 is simple: you don't have to leave fintech to find choice, and you don't have to settle for the first recruiter who calls. The depth is there — 10,492 open roles' worth. What turns that depth into a shortlist is intelligence about the specific companies, which is the part a listings site won't give you.
Forward Deployed Engineers reach fintech
One more signal worth flagging: 30 fintech companies are now running 57 active Forward Deployed Engineer listings — the embedded, customer-facing engineering title that started at AI companies. When a title crosses from AI startups into payments and banking infrastructure, it's a hiring pattern, not a fad. I covered the full market in our Forward Deployed Engineer analysis — if you're an engineer who likes customer-facing work, fintech is now one of the places that title pays.
What this means if you're an engineer targeting fintech
One caution before the takeaways: open-role volume is a demand signal, not a quality signal. A company can post 150 roles because it's compounding — or because it's churning through people faster than it can hire them. Funding history set against headcount growth tells you which story you're looking at, and that's exactly the check to run before you commit an evening to an application. With that caveat, three moves fall out of this data:
- Rank by open roles, not brand recognition. Airwallex's 157 openings are more absolute opportunity right now than Stripe's 117 — and the less famous name almost certainly draws fewer applicants per opening.
- Research cross-border payments first. Airwallex and Adyen alone account for 217 active engineering roles — the deepest single theme on the leaderboard.
- Vet stage and runway before you apply. A leaderboard tells you where to start the research, not where to send the resume — the funding history, tech stack, and team on each company profile tell you whether the volume is growth or churn.
Methodology
Numbers come from Employbl's live jobs dataset: 90,150 active, ATS-verified listings pulled from company career boards on Greenhouse, Lever, and Ashby as of July 16, 2026, across 25,000+ tracked companies. Fintech sector counts use Employbl's company industry tags. Engineering counts match active listings whose titles contain "engineer" or "developer" — that includes some non-software engineering titles and misses engineering roles titled otherwise, so treat per-company counts as comparable to each other rather than exact org-chart sizes. We count what each company's ATS boards publish; a company that hires primarily through channels we don't track will undercount.
Browse the fintech companies hiring now on Employbl — funding, tech stack, and team on every profile — and vet the company before you spend an evening on the application.
