Underwriter, Brazil

Job description
Jeeves is a groundbreaking financial operating system built for global businesses that provides corporate cards, cross-border payments, and spend management software within one unified platform. The company operates across 20+ countries including Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Mexico, the United Kingdom, across Europe, and the United States, and serves over 5,000 clients ranging from venture-backed startups to SMBs around the world. With a mission to empower businesses with more efficient and cost-effective financial solutions worldwide, Jeeves combines cutting-edge financial technology with exceptional team expertise to transform the business financial landscape. Jeeves has been recognized as one of The Information's 50 Most Promising Startups in 2023, as well as a Y Combinator Top Company 2021-2023 and won “Fintech of the Year" at the European Fintech Awards.

Since graduating from Y Combinator in 2020, Jeeves has successfully raised over $380 million and is backed by top world-class investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Y Combinator, CRV, Tencent, Stanford University, Clocktower Ventures, and founders of more than 15 unicorns including David Velez (Nubank), Carlos Garcia (Kavak) and Sebastián Mejía (Rappi).

Brazil is one of Jeeves's fastest-growing markets, and the number of companies applying for our corporate cards there keeps climbing. Every one of those applications needs a thoughtful credit decision, and every approved account needs to be watched over time. Today that work sits largely with one senior underwriter. We're adding an Underwriter to the team so we can keep decisions fast and sound as volume grows, and so the Brazil book is never dependent on a single person.

Alongside traditional credit analysis, our underwriters work closely with AI tools that help organize borrower data, draft parts of the analysis and surface questions worth asking. The judgment and the final call stay with you. We're continually moving more of our workflow onto AI, and you'll be part of shaping how that happens. If you're excited by the idea of building the next version of underwriting while practicing the fundamentals, this role is for you.

You'll work side by side with our senior underwriter in Brazil, analyzing new applications from startups and SMBs, preparing credit recommendations, and helping monitor the existing portfolio for early signs of stress. You'll learn how our scoring models work and when judgment needs to go beyond the model, and you'll build the kind of context on the book that lets you cover confidently when your teammate is out. You'll also work closely with our Sales and Account Management teams in Brazil, who rely on clear, timely answers.

This is a hands-on analyst role with real ownership of a growing share of the queue. You won't hold final approval authority on day one — you'll earn more of it as you build judgment and a track record — and there's a clear path to growing into a senior underwriting role as Brazil scales.

Location: This role is based out of São Paulo and is a full-time hybrid position where it is required to come into our office in São Paulo. #LI-HYBRID

What You'll Do:

Credit Analysis & Underwriting

  • Analyze new corporate card applications from Brazilian startups and SMBs, reviewing financial statements (DRE, balanço), bank data, bureau reports and our internal model score

  • Prepare clear credit recommendations — proposed limit, key risks, mitigants — for review and approval

  • Explain how the model score and the non-model parts of your assessment fit together, in writing and verbally

  • Research borrowers and their industries to understand what could affect their ability to pay

  • Work a share of the daily application queue within agreed turnaround times

  • Portfolio Monitoring

  • Run periodic reviews of existing accounts, including limit increase and decrease requests

  • Track portfolio health (utilization, payment behavior, delinquency) and flag accounts that need attention

  • Partner with Collections on accounts showing early signs of stress

  • Keep account files and credit memos organized so any teammate can pick up a decision

  • Working With AI

  • Use AI tools to support your analysis, and verify their outputs against source data

  • Suggest and help build improvements to our AI workflows as you see what works and what doesn't

  • Business Continuity & Process

  • Build enough context on the Brazil book to cover the queue and key accounts when our senior underwriter is out

  • Help document underwriting guidelines, decision rationale and recurring edge cases

  • Suggest improvements that make the underwriting process faster or more consistent

  • Help evaluate new Brazilian data sources (bureaus, Open Finance data, receivables data) alongside the team

  • Cross-Functional Partnership

  • Give Sales and Account Management clear, timely answers on applications and limits — including the reasoning behind a "no"

  • Join customer conversations when more financial information is needed to make a decision

  • Share what you see in the Brazil market with the wider Credit & Risk team

  • Minimum Requirements:
  • 2–4 years of experience in credit analysis, underwriting or credit risk in Brazil — at a bank, fintech, FIDC, credit bureau, factoring company or similar

  • Hands-on experience reading and analyzing Brazilian company financial statements and building a view on repayment capacity

  • Working familiarity with Brazilian credit data sources such as Serasa, Boa Vista, SCR (Banco Central) or similar

  • Experience conducting conversations with clients to clarify questions regarding the financial and risk information provided for analysis.

  • Strong Excel or Google Sheets skills — comfortable building a simple analysis from raw data

  • Experience using AI tools such as Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini in your analytical work, and curiosity about using them more

  • Can write a concise credit recommendation that a non-credit colleague can follow

  • Fluent in Portuguese and professionally fluent in English (written and spoken) — English is how we work across regions

  • Based in São Paulo and able to work hybrid from our Av. Pres. Juscelino Kubitschek office

  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience underwriting SMB or commercial credit (as opposed to consumer only)

  • Exposure to corporate cards, payments, working capital or other revolving credit products

  • Some experience with SQL, Python or BI tools for pulling and analyzing portfolio data

  • Experience at a high-growth startup or fintech

  • Degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, Business, Engineering or a related field
