About the Role
As a Senior Backend Engineer at Uber Freight, you will architect and build highly scalable systems that power the logistics network connecting shippers and carriers. You’ll work closely with Product Managers, Designers, and Data Scientists to deliver systems that optimize pricing, routing, and operational workflows. Your work will directly impact thousands of freight movements every day, and you’ll help define the long-term technical vision for our platform. You’ll also play a key role in mentoring engineers and driving best practices across teams, ensuring our infrastructure is robust, performant, and future-ready.

 

What the Candidate Will Do

  • Design and implement robust, scalable, and secure backend systems and services across multiple domains.
  • Lead system design discussions and influence the architecture of large-scale distributed systems.
  • Drive engineering best practices and set high standards for code quality, testing, and deployment processes.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including Product, Design, and Operations to deliver impactful features.
  • Mentor and guide junior and mid-level engineers, providing technical leadership and fostering growth.
  • Contribute to long-term technical strategy and proactively identify areas for system and process improvement.
  • Troubleshoot complex production issues and lead resolution efforts across teams.

 

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of software engineering experience.
  • Strong problem solving and coding skills.
  • Experience with one or more of Go, Java, Python, or C++.
  • Experience with micro-service architecture and systems design.
  • Experience developing highly scalable backend microservices.
  • Experience writing unit and integration tests for backend services.
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively in cross-functional teams.
  • Proven experience with leading projects and mentoring junior engineers.
  • Knowledge of data structure and algorithms and an ability to use them practically when implementing solutions.  

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS, MS, or PhD degree in computer science, related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience with one of the following databases: MySQL, Cassandra.
  • Proficiency in configuration targeting, automated rollbacks, and client SDK integration within application deployments.
  • Experience shipping high-quality product features on schedule.
  • Experience handling complex problems at scale.
  • Knowledge of the logistics and freight industry is a bonus.
  • Experience with React is a plus.
