Job description

Open Position – Senior/Staff/Principal Mechanical Engineer - Robotic Hardware

Horizon Surgical Systems Inc.

Horizon Surgical Systems Inc. is revolutionizing the world of surgical ophthalmology by developing a novel, AI driven, and  imaging-guided surgical robotic system. Horizon Surgical Systems Inc. aims to expand access to care, provide superior capabilities to the human surgeon, and enhance patient outcomes. Microsurgery in general and Ophthalmology are subfields of surgery for which the surgical outcomes can be significantly improved by robotic systems to allow superior dexterity, precision, accuracy, and visualization beyond the human surgeon’s own capabilities.

We are seeking highly motivated, detail-oriented, and intellectually inquisitive individuals looking to make a positive impact on healthcare via the development of robotic technology. The core values of Horizon Surgical Systems Inc. are:

  • Commitment to Excellence: We aim to deliver superior patient outcomes and surgeon experiences
  • Passion for Creativity and Innovation: We are driven by new ideas and aim to push the boundaries of what's possible
  • Teamwork and Camaraderie: We achieve our best when we collaborate and work together
  • Welcoming of Critical Opinion: We are enriched by constructive criticism and support the best ideas
  • Personal Accountability: We honor our commitments and take responsibility for our actions

Horizon Surgical Systems Inc. offers:

  • An opportunity to build autonomous surgical robotic systems driven by image guidance and AI technology for the future of affordable, high-quality healthcare.
  • The opportunity to work alongside clinicians, engineers, and global leaders in cutting-edge AI, imaging, and robotics technology.
  • Competitive compensation and an excellent company-paid benefits package.

Horizon Surgical Systems Inc. is seeking mechanical engineers with significant experience in robotic product development to contribute to a novel surgical robotic system for ophthalmology.

Qualifications:

  • Education and experience:
    • Preferred: B.S.+10/M.S.+8 YOE in robot product development.
    • Minimum: B.S.+5/M.S.+3 YOE in robot product development.
    • Ph.D. research on robot mechanism design and robotic hardware development may substitute for industry experience.
    • Degrees should be in relevant disciplines such as mechanical / electrical / mechatronics / biomedical / robotics engineering, material science, or computer science.
    • Must have previously developed, from concept to at least functional prototype, multi-DOF robotic systems.
    • Staff/Principal levels expected to have personally developed non-traditional multi-DOF robotic systems (not 6/7 DOF industrial arm, SCARA, gimbal, XYZ stage, etc).
  • Expertise in:
    • Hardware design of robotic mechanisms.
      • Experience with novel or unusual kinematic structures
      • Deep mechanical design expertise of linear and rotary joints
      • Familiarity with a wide range of transmission mechanisms
      • Experience with robotic components from a wide range of vendors
      • Proficiency at simulation and analysis of robotic kinematics, dynamics, and workspace
      • Working knowledge of electrical design, including basic PCB design, component selection, and wiring.
    • Design in compliance with FDA guidelines
    • CAD - SolidWorks, SolidWorks PDM, GD&T.
    • Hands-on prototyping, debugging, and testing.
    • Sufficient programming ability in languages/software such as Python, MATLAB, or C/C++ to design, test, and analyze performance of developed hardware systems.
  • Other Technical Desirables:
    • Experience designing robotic systems to pass IEC 60601-1-2
    • Ability to incorporate aesthetics into functional designs
    • Innovative and creative thinking
    • Experience with remote-center-of-motion mechanisms and haptic devices

Expectations and Responsibilities:

  • Lead and participate in teams, and work independently, to develop the electro-mechanical subsystems of a complete surgical robotic system.
  • Adhere and contribute to design standards, the Quality Management System, and project planning.
  • Apply all available tools, software, training, and experience to effectively analyze and solve engineering problems, mitigate potential risks, and maximize system functionality and safety.
  • Assist and cooperate with other teams and colleagues to find solutions to interdisciplinary challenges inherent in complex robot system development.
  • Commute to, and work on-site, at our Santa Monica or Malibu-based offices as needed. This is a 5-days-in-office position.
  • Effectively communicate and present to upper management, within and between teams, and to external parties.

Compensation:

Horizon Surgical Systems offers a competitive compensation and benefits package including medical, dental, 401k, remote days, unlimited PTO, paid maternity/paternity leave, and company holidays.

Base salary ranges (excluding equity and end of year bonuses)

  • Senior: $110k-$135k
  • Staff: $135k-$160k
