Turbomachinery Integration Lead

Job description

About American Supercritical

American Supercritical is making heat to valuable to waste. We are building a new generation of power plants for a world that desperately needs electricity. We’re developing supercritical CO2 turbomachinery that can turn today’s gas turbines into dramatically more efficient combined-cycle systems initially for the fast-growing data center market. These same systems can also transform how SMRs, geothermal plants, concentrated solar plants, thermal batteries, and industrial processes convert heat to electricity.

We’re a team of energy, aerospace, and power-generation veterans building real machines to solve hard problems in energy. We’re looking for exceptional engineers who want broad ownership, fast iteration cycles, and the opportunity to help define both the product and the company.

Role Overview

The Turbomachinery Integration Lead owns the machine-level integration that turns subsystem designs into one buildable, assemblable, and testable turbomachine. You will live in the interfaces: packaging, fits, clearances, thermal growth, bearing and seal interfaces, generator integration, instrumentation routing, assembly sequence, and configuration control.

You’ll work across aerodynamic, structural, rotordynamic, electrical, thermal, manufacturing, and test teams to resolve conflicts and drive technical closure. This role is equal parts top-level mechanical design, cross-functional systems engineering, and hands-on ownership during assembly and test.

Responsibilities

  • Own mechanical integration of the complete turbomachinery assembly across rotor, casing, bearings, seals, generator, fluid interfaces, instrumentation, and auxiliaries.

  • Maintain the top-level CAD assembly, interface definitions, configuration, mass properties, and machine-level design intent.

  • Drive packaging, tolerance stack-ups, fits, clearances, alignment strategy, thermal growth, and assembly sequencing.

  • Define subsystem interfaces and resolve conflicts among aerodynamic, structural, rotordynamic, electrical, thermal, manufacturing, and test requirements.

  • Lead machine-level design reviews, supplier interface reviews, and design-for-manufacture, inspection, installation, serviceability, and repeatable assembly decisions.

  • Work on the shop floor during builds, lead dimensional and assembly troubleshooting, capture as-built configuration and deviations, and drive design updates from first hardware into a repeatable product architecture.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 5+ years designing and integrating complex mechanical hardware that was manufactured, assembled, and tested.

  • Strong 3D CAD and mechanical-design fundamentals, including fits, tolerances, GD&T, stack-ups, fasteners, joints, and assembly design.

  • Experience owning interfaces across multiple engineering disciplines rather than only a single component.

  • Hands-on experience supporting assembly and solving dimensional or mechanical integration problems on real hardware.

  • Strong system-level judgment, configuration discipline, and a track record of taking complicated mechanical assemblies from architecture through first build.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.

  • Experience with gas turbines, compressors, rocket engines, turbopumps, turbochargers, high-speed generators, or other rotating machinery.

  • Experience with bearing, seal, shaft, casing, or generator integration in precision rotating assemblies.

  • Experience with assembly tooling, metrology, alignment, balancing, and tight-clearance hardware.

Benefits & Compensation

  • Meaningful equity ownership in an early-stage company.

  • 100% of employee medical premiums and 80% of dependent medical premiums covered.

  • 100% employer-paid dental and vision coverage.

  • Employer-paid basic life insurance and long-term disability coverage.

  • 401(k) retirement plan.

  • Unlimited PTO that we actually expect you to take.

  • 8 weeks of paid parental leave.

  • Significant ownership of real hardware.

  • A beautiful view of the Rocky Mountains from the office.

Our Commitment

American Supercritical is an equal opportunity employer. We evaluate qualified applicants without regard to race, religion, national origin, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, marital or veteran status, disability, or any other protected characteristic under applicable law.
