Job description

About Mariana Minerals

Mariana Minerals is a software-first, vertically integrated minerals company on a mission to supply the critical minerals powering modern energy, AI, and defense technologies. We’re reimagining the minerals supply chain by combining deep industry expertise with advanced software, automation, and data-driven decision-making.

The role

We are hiring a Senior Safety Engineer to lead ISO 45001 implementation and help our teams solve safety challenges in equipment and facility design. You will establish the system at an initial site, build company policies and procedures that other locations can use, and support integration as Mariana develops new operations.

You will also work closely with Engineering on risk assessments, safety requirements, calculations, and validation. The expected focus is approximately 50% ISO 45001 and OHS management systems, 30% functional safety engineering, and 20% general safety engineering support. You will spend time with the people doing the work and turn technical requirements into solutions they can use.

What You'll Do

  • Lead the ISO 45001 gap assessment and implementation plan, with clear priorities, owners, milestones, and evidence of completion.

  • Develop practical OHS policies and procedures; involve workers, coach process owners, and build consistent systems that future sites can adopt.

  • Coordinate internal audits, compliance evaluations, management reviews, corrective actions, and certification readiness. Maintain usable documents, records, and performance measures.

  • Support new locations through design, construction, commissioning, and operations, adapting the company framework to local hazards and requirements.

  • Lead or support equipment risk assessments and design reviews for fixed/mobile equipment and other systems, including safeguarding, interlocks, emergency stops, and operating modes.

  • Define safety functions and requirements; perform and review assigned performance level or safety integrity level calculations and document their assumptions.

  • Develop and execute verification and validation activities, maintain traceability, and assess changes that require revalidation. Arrange specialist analysis and independent review where needed.

  • Provide engineering input on facility and fire or life safety questions with qualified design specialists, and support commissioning, hazardous energy isolation, and startup reviews.

  • Support incident investigations, field risk assessments, training, and other H&S improvements with site teams and the PSM Engineer. Follow actions through to verified closure.

Provide general safety engineering support

  • Contribute to design and commissioning reviews, hazardous energy isolation, incident investigations, and practical improvements with site H&S and the PSM Engineer.

  • Support facility and fire and life safety questions with project teams and qualified design specialists. Explain requirements clearly, propose workable options, and follow issues through to resolution.

Qualifications

  • Typically 7+ years of relevant safety engineering, industrial engineering, or OHS experience, including substantial responsibility for ISO 45001 implementation in an industrial setting.

  • Approximately 3–5 years of hands-on functional safety or safety-related control-system experience within your broader career, including risk assessments, safety requirements, calculations, and testing.

  • Applied knowledge of ISO 45001 and familiarity with other OHS management systems, such as ANSI/ASSP Z10 or ILO-OSH 2001, plus relevant audit and implementation guidance.

  • Experience applying machinery risk assessment and functional safety methods, including ISO 12100 and ISO 13849 or IEC 62061 as appropriate. Ability to read engineering drawings and control narratives and explain the basis for a safety calculation.

  • Strong technical writing, facilitation, and project delivery skills. You can work through design disagreements, coach teams, and take ownership of closing gaps.

  • Sound judgment about applicable safety requirements and the limits of your expertise, with the ability to bring in the right specialist and keep work moving.

Preferred qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, mechatronics, controls, systems, industrial, safety, or a closely related engineering discipline is strongly preferred. Equivalent demonstrated engineering experience will also be considered.

  • Experience taking a site through ISO 45001 certification, recognized lead-auditor training, or deployment of common systems across multiple locations.

  • Experience in mining, mineral processing, chemicals, manufacturing, or comparable operations; familiarity with SISTEMA, safety PLCs, or automated equipment. Relevant functional safety training or a CSP credential is valuable.

Our culture is built on four principles:

Everyone Gets Home Safe. We never put speed or cost ahead of people.

Extreme Ownership. We take full responsibility for outcomes, relentlessly driving toward solutions.

Engineer Out Requirements, then Automate. We simplify, optimize, and then automate for scale.

Share Your Legos. We collaborate openly, share knowledge, and empower each other to build bigger, better solutions.

Join us as we build the future of responsible mineral sourcing and supply!
