Job description

Position Summary:

Nusano has an incredible opportunity to contribute to the advances of radioisotope production for cancer treatment and diagnosis. This Senior R&D Radiochemist will own significant chemistry workstreams from end-to-end as related to isotope production. This role designs and executes complex experiments, applies quality-by-design (QbD) principles, mentors early-career scientists, and resolves cross-functional technical issues. This role collaborates cross-functionally to support and advance new isotope products and improve existing processes. This is an onsite role based out of our West Valley City offices.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead planning, execution and troubleshooting of chemistry development workstreams

    • Design and execute complex experiments, analyze data, and recommend next steps for assigned workstream.

    • Apply QbD principles and lead risk-based assessments for assigned programs.

    • Drive continuous improvement of chemistry processes and workflows.

    • Support benchtop-to-hot cell scale-up activities and process hand-off to Operations.

    • Coordinate with safety and other experts to ensure compliance with customer, regulatory, and internal requirements for new product development and production.

    • Provide subject matter expertise during cross-functional investigations and technical discussions.

  • Mentor early-career scientists

    • Provide guidance in experimental execution, data analysis, and documentation.

    • Provide guidance on laboratory best practices, safety, and compliance.

    • Support development and delivery of staff training for experiment execution and data analysis.

    • Support onboarding of new staff through informal coaching.

  • Technical documentation

    • Generate high-quality technical documentation, including development reports and experimental records.

    • Maintain accurate laboratory notebooks and ensure data integrity through peer review.

    • Follow chemical and radiological safety procedures and support continuous improvement of safe laboratory practices.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in radiochemistry, inorganic chemistry, nuclear engineering, or related field with a minimum of 4–6+ years progressive experience, OR M.S. with 6–8+ years of experience.

  • Demonstrated success owning complex development workstreams.

Preferential Experience:

  • Experience developing radiochemical separation methods or other chemistry manufacturing processes (ion exchange and extraction chromatography, liquid-liquid extraction, electroplating, thermal reduction, etc.).

  • Familiarity with analytical instrumentation (HPGe, gamma counter, pH meter, autotitrator, ICP-MS/OES, etc.).

  • Automation of chemical processes.

  • Hands-on experience with gamma, beta, and/or alpha emitters in gloveboxes or hot cells.

  • Chemical and radiological laboratory safety (regulatory and best practices).

  • Experience working in regulated environments (ICH Q7, 21 CFR 211/212).

  • Experience generating CMC content to support regulatory filings.

  • Strong technical writing skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be comfortable working as a radiation worker.

  • Work to be conducted in both an office environment and production facility.

  • Ability to work sitting and standing for extended periods, grasping/gripping, fine motor control with hands.

  • Ability to lift, push, and/or pull a maximum of 30 lbs.

  • Ability to travel 2-8 weeks per year for experiments, visiting vendors, and attending conferences.
