Job title
Associate Electrical Engineer
Job location
Lanham, Maryland, United States
Job description

AST SpaceMobile and our global partners are building the first and only space-based cellular broadband network to be accessible by standard smartphones. Called SpaceMobile, this ultra-powerful network is being designed to provide connectivity at 4G/5G speeds everywhere on the planet – on land, at sea and in flight.

Position Overview

We are seeking an Associate Electrical Engineer to join our team in a full-time, entry-level role. In this position, you will contribute to the design, analysis, testing, and integration of satellite electrical components and associated ground support equipment. You will work closely with experienced engineers within the Electrical and Power Subsystem (EPS) and across other subsystems, taking ownership of defined tasks on real spacecraft hardware while building your expertise in system-level electrical design through mentorship and on-the-job development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design, analysis, testing, and integration of satellite electrical systems, including batteries, solar panels, and power distribution.
  • Perform system-level electrical design tasks such as power budgeting, load analysis, and interface definition between spacecraft subsystems, with guidance from senior engineers.
  • Develop, execute, and document test procedures to verify EPS functionality, performance, and reliability.
  • Conduct hands-on hardware testing and troubleshooting in laboratory environments, including integration and test activities.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including electrical schematics, block diagrams, interface control documents, and test reports.
  • Analyze electrical performance data collected on-orbit, identify potential anomalies, and support root-cause investigations.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (mechanical, thermal, RF, command and data handling, mission operations, and software) on system integration and verification.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field (recent graduates encouraged to apply).

Experience

  • 0–2 years of relevant experience, including internships, co-ops, or academic projects involving circuits, power electronics, systems engineering, space systems, or aerospace applications.
  • Hands-on experience with electrical hardware design, test, or integration.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with satellite Electrical and Power Systems concepts such as solar arrays, batteries, power conditioning, and power distribution.
  • Working knowledge of circuit analysis, power electronics, and electrical safety practices.
  • Proficiency with CAD or schematic capture tools (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical, Altium, Mentor Graphics, or similar).
  • Experience with analysis or simulation tools (e.g., MATLAB, SPICE).
  • Spaceflight or aerospace hardware experience through prior roles, internships, or student design teams (e.g., CubeSat, rocketry, or robotics).

Soft Skills

  • Ownership mindset and the ability to manage assigned tasks through to completion.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Attention to detail in technical work and documentation.

Technology Stack

  • Electrical analysis and simulation tools: MATLAB, SPICE.
  • CAD and schematic capture tools (varies by project).
  • Test equipment: power supplies, multimeters, oscilloscopes, electronic loads.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in a standard office environment and use a computer for extended periods.
  • Regular hands-on work with hardware in laboratory and cleanroom environments.

This job description may not be inclusive to the duties and responsibilities listed. Additional tasks may be assigned to the employee from time to time or the scope of the job may change as needed by business demands.
