Senior Image Processing Engineer

Like our constellation of imaging satellites, our business is rapidly expanding. We are looking for an experienced Image Processing Engineer to join our Imaging Department. The Imaging Department is a hybrid hardware-software group dedicated to the performance of BlackSky's imagery product and its on-orbit imaging systems. As an Image Processing Engineer, you will directly contribute to the image processing pipeline that transforms raw pixels into imagery products.

While the locations listed in the job posting are ideal, we would love candidates near either our Herndon, VA or Seattle, WA offices. We may also consider remote candidates in certain states.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the testing and development of automated processes for monitoring image quality and regression testing of the image processing pipeline.
  • Develop the algorithms and tools to process raw pixel values into imagery products.
  • Maintain those algorithms and tools throughout their operational life cycle, particularly in commercial operations.
  • Collaborate across the organization to improve our concepts of imaging operations, inform new sensor and satellite designs, and define new imagery products and capabilities.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of science, Bachelor of arts, or Masters in Astronomy, Physics, Planetary Science, Remote Sensing, Geosciences, Computer Science or related engineering fields.
  • At least five years of experience developing image processing algorithms.
  • At least five years of experience developing software in Python.
  • Minimum of three years working with an operational imaging system.
  • A strong mathematical base in algorithm development, numerics, data processing, and uncertainty propagation.
  • A personality that enjoys working in a dynamic and collaborative environment.
  • Motivation to self-teach and the ability to thrive on challenging problems.
  • Excellent communication and organization skills.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Astronomy, Physics, Planetary Science, Remote Sensing, Geosciences, Computer Science or related engineering fields.
  • Experience developing image-processing and analysis pipelines.
  • Previous experience working with CCD and CMOS sensors.
  • Experience working with reflective and/or refractive telescopes.
  • Prior experience in processing geospatial or astronomical imagery.
  • Experience participating in an enterprise software development environment.

The anticipated salary range for candidates in Seattle, WA is $130,000 to $150,000 per year. The final compensation package offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on specific background and education. BlackSky is a multi-state employer and this pay scale may not reflect salary ranges in other states or locations outside of Seattle, WA.
