Job Summary

Kairos Power is seeking a highly motivated Senior Fire Protection Engineer with expertise in fire hazards analysis, and fire protection system design. In this role, you will be ensure that all fire code/life safety requirements are met for new and existing radiological, nuclear, and non-nuclear industrial facilities. You will interface across the organization between engineering design, construction forces, operations, and EH&S to support the fire protection system design.

Responsibilities

  • Provide fire protection expertise as the subject matter expert during the design, construction, and operation of Kairos Power radiological and non-radiological facilities
  • Oversee and provide input to the fire hazards analysis for both new facilities and modifications to existing facilities
  • Prescribe design requirements for fire protection systems based on facility fire hazard analysis and provide oversight of their design, construction, and operation
  • Identify, review and recommend solutions to problems relating to the efficient and economical design of a wide variety of fire protection systems
  • Conduct technical review of building construction design development documents, preliminary construction documents, completed construction documents, final construction documents, specifications and shop design submittals for new construction and major rehabilitation for compliance with nuclear regulatory standards
  • Provide input to the EHS team on development and implementation of the site Hazardous Material Management Plan, E-Plan, and Hazardous Material Information Summary
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering with fire protection engineering concentration preferred
  • 10+ years of work experience in industrial facility design, construction, commissioning, and/or operations
  • 10+ years of experience working as a fire protection engineer and familiar with nuclear, radiological, and/or other higher-hazard industrial facilities
  • Possess a Professional Fire Protection Engineer License in one of the US states or territories is preferred
  • Knowledge of new and existing non-reactor facility structural engineering systems and calculations, applications of engineering methods, and application of computer-aided engineering tools to solve operations-based engineering problems
  • Ability to apply standard and specialized engineering and scientific, principles, theories, concepts, and techniques to contribute to risk and hazard analyses for nuclear and non-nuclear facilities
  • Demonstrates fire protection engineering knowledge and experience that provides evidence of qualifications acceptable to the AHJ
  • Comprehensive knowledge of site planning, building design and construction means, methods and codes
  • Have a thorough working knowledge of IBC/IFC code and fire standards such as NFPA 400, NFPA 805, and/or 10 CFR 50 Appendix R
  • Proven technical knowledge of risk assessment methodologies, as well as experience in performing, applying, and reviewing fire hazard analysis
  • Experience performing fire hazard analysis, knowledge of applicable DOE Standards and DOE Orders, and experience in working with these Standards and Orders
  • Familiar with 3D drafting and design software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, etc.
  • Ability to work with highly collaborative team

  • Ability to proactively collect, manage and transfer knowledge
  • Ability to seek different and novel ways to create efficiencies when working on problems, challenges and issues

Physical Conditions

  • Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, scissor lifts, articulated boom lifts
  • Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces
  • Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another
  • Adjusting, moving, transporting, installing, positioning, or removing objects up to 25 pounds in all directions
  • Communicating with others to exchange information

  • Wearing proper PPE, to include face mask, face shields, gloves, safety shoes

Travel

  • Some travel may be required, up to 10%

  • Requires seldom non-standard work-week hours 
  • Requires occasional extended hours to support launch and critical project timelines
