Kairos Power is a new nuclear energy technology and engineering company whose mission is to enable the world’s transition to clean energy, with the ultimate goal to dramatically improve people’s quality of life while protecting the environment. This goal will be accomplished through the commercialization of the fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR) that can be deployed with robust safety, affordable costs, and flexible operation to accommodate the expansion of variable renewables.

Job Summary

Kairos Power is seeking a highly motivated Senior Chemical Process Engineer with expertise in operating first of a kind chemical production facility. In this role you will be responsible for managing design improvements, optimization, and functional upgrades to Kairos Power’s first chemical production facility. The Engineer would partner with an operations team to troubleshoot, optimize, and improve the overall operations of the facility in order to deliver a molten salt heat transfer fluid.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for design support of the operations team in leading and approving equipment upgrades to facilitate material production
  • Manage budget and schedule for the chemical plant
  • Develop production cost models that can be used for company financials
  • Supports other engineers and process specialists on each of the phases of a project
  • Mentor other engineers on practical considerations associated with process engineering including operability, best practices on safety, and relevant code requirements.
  • Interface with internal and external customers as needed
  • Publish engineering reports documenting design details or qualification test results
  • Maintain knowledge of and assess compliance with applicable codes and standards
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or equivalent
  • Eligible for P.Eng status in any state
  • 10+ years relevant experience in chemical, petrochemical, oil&gas or similar industry 
  • Experience working with engineering firms and SMEs to ensure design completeness
  • Experience in selecting, sizing, and working with process tankage
  • Experienced in reviewing vendor proposals, drawings, and documents for mechanical-related completeness
  • Proven track record with site upgrades with examples of pragmatic and creative cost, schedule saving measures
  • Skilled in finding, inspecting, and selecting process equipment
  • Experience in generating Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), utility consumption lists, mass and heat balance diagrams
  • Experience in general arrangement and mechanical packaging
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills and the ability to articulate process issues and recommendations on a study report
  • Broad experience across different chemical processes
  • Handling practices with toxics (gases, bulk solids, etc.) is a plus
  • Experience as a technical mentor
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills and the ability to articulate process issues and recommendations on a study report
  • Ability to work with highly collaborative team
  • Ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently
  • Prioritizes and ensures safety of one self and others
  • Ability to proactively collect, manage and transfer knowledge

Safety and PPE

  • Wearing proper PPE, to include face mask, face shields, gloves, safety shoes
  • Handling of Beryllium (Be)

Travel

  • Some travel may be required (i.e. 10-20%)

Additional Requirements

  • Requires extended hours to support launch and critical project timelines occasionally
