MongoDB Atlas App Services is a backend as a service that lets you directly access MongoDB anywhere and interact with other services such as HTTP APIs, GraphQL, GitHub, & Auth Services. App Services is backed by a powerful, easy to use rule system and includes features such as serverless functions, database triggers, and App Services Mobile Sync.

The App Services Core team is responsible for the App Services backend, frontend, and CLI. This includes API development, as well as the admin front-end and CLI tool used to edit App Services apps. Members of the team are passionate about API design and making developers' lives easier and more efficient. The technologies the team works with are Go and Modern JavaScript (ES6+, Typescript, React, RTL/Enzyme/Cypress).

The ideal candidate will

  • Have a bachelor's degree in Computer Science or other technical fields, or an equivalent combination of work and education experience
  • Have demonstrated ability developing robust back-end and frontend software at scale, including experience with concurrency and distributed systems
  • Have substantial, demonstrable experience writing high-quality software
  • Have a love for crafting and implementing ergonomic APIs
  • Have a desire for continuous learning of new technologies, languages, and platforms
  • Be an effective communicator, an engineer, and problem solver
  • Possess the ability to self-start and improve themselves
  • Have 4+ years experience programming in a high-level server-side language like Go, Java, C++, or Python, and UI programming with Javascript (React, or another front-end framework)
  • Have 1-2+ years as a technical lead with proven experience managing large-scale projects to completion
  • Have some experience with or basic knowledge of MongoDB

Position Expectations

  • Collaborate effectively with teammates and colleagues across the organization
  • Lead a small team with the ability to mentor and assist in their growth as engineers according to MongoDB's core values
  • Grow that small team to a team of 4-6 engineers over time
  • Balance your time between coding, designing, mentorship, and leading your team
  • Write high quality (e.g. clean, well-tested) code
  • Grow and recruit new team members
  • Deliver tasks on-time, clearly communicate challenges or roadblocks and helps other do so
  • Participate actively in the code review process
  • Design effective solutions to challenging software engineering problems

The Lead Engineer will be successful in this role when they

  • Have a vision for the future of the product and can articulate the way forward
  • Understand their direct reports and be able to guide them to successful project completions
  • Know how to communicate effectively with other teams to achieve a common goal
  • Can deliver tasks through the entire SDLC, from design through deployment with minimal guidance
  • Can be a source of guidance and advice to their own team members and other teams
  • Build a relationship with their team around trust
  • Are able to plan and execute on delivering features on a predictable basis while working with Product and Design
  • Can forge a path to planning, executing, and delivering features while working cross-functionally with our Product and Design teams

This role is based out of our New York City office (minimum 3 days per week) with the potential to become more remote in the North America region in the future.
