Company Overview
Kairos Power is a new nuclear energy technology and engineering company whose mission is to enable the world’s transition to clean energy, with the ultimate goal to dramatically improve people’s quality of life while protecting the environment. This goal will be accomplished through the commercialization of the fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR) that can be deployed with robust safety, affordable costs, and flexible operation to accommodate the expansion of variable renewables.
Job Summary
The Environmental Engineer will act as a shared environmental resource across Kairos Power, focusing on compliance and implementation of environmental programs. While this position will be located at our facility near Albuquerque, New Mexico, this is a multi-site support role working in partnership to provide permitting support, build capability and provide guidance to improve the overall performance. This role will partner with other functions within the company to implement and manage environmental programs (including permitting and ongoing compliance monitoring) and training. The person in this position will support and drive continuous improvement of key performance metrics through project management and auditing functions.
Responsibilities
- Review projects to determine if environmental permits are required for the proposed activities
- Initiate and coordinate permitting activities with project team and local EHS team for any projects that may require permits
- Once permits are issued, work with local EHS team and operations team to establish required Compliance Management System elements for new permits.
- Work with local EHS teams as a Subject Matter Expert for environmental programs.
- Develop and coordinate an internal and third-party environmental audit program.
- Monitor and review any changes to applicable regulations at the local, state and federal level. Work with local EHS team to implement any required procedural or equipment modifications required by the regulatory changes.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or higher degree in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering or related engineering discipline
- 10+ years of work experience in a chemical manufacturing or petroleum refining role with at least 5 of those years in an environmental focused position that included permitting activities
- Strong working knowledge of environmental regulations covering air, water and waste, as well as reporting requirements such as SARA 311/312 and TRI.
- Excellent communication skills with all levels of the organization
- Strong leadership skills in EHS programs
- Experience working with Governmental Agencies at the local, state and federal level
- Ability to work independently, as well as part of a highly integrated and collaborative team
- Ability to break down or modify complex EHS technical information as needed to communicate it orally or in writing to non-EHS Company staff
- Ability to work with highly collaborative team
- Ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently
- Prioritizes and ensures safety of one self and others
- Ability to proactively collect, manage and transfer knowledge
- Ability to seek different and novel ways to create efficiencies when working on problems, challenges and issues
- Experience in designing, developing and implementing effective environmental management systems for continual improvement and risk reduction preferred
- Experience in Incident Investigations for Environmental Incidents preferred
- Experience in conducting environmental audits of all media preferred
