Design Team Manager - Beam

BEAM’s Design Team, a department of BEAM’s Programs Division, is responsible for the design, piloting, and codification of BEAM’s core programming, including BEAM Discovery and the five modules that together comprise the BEAM Pathway Program (8th grade-college graduation). The team is responsible for building and then delivering materials and systems ready for implementation to local programs teams (currently Los Angeles and New York City), training colleagues on these materials and systems, and conducting an iterative improvement cycle to those materials and systems as needed. To enable building and training to proceed effectively, the Design Team places strong focus on effective communication, both written and verbal. The Design Team works closely with the Learning & Evaluation Team to ensure that monitoring and data collection is happening, that formative and summative results are considered, and that improvements are data driven.

YOUR ROLE

As the Design Team Manager, your core work will be understanding BEAM’s programs deeply enough to produce high quality implementation and training materials. The implementation materials will allow programs to run as designed. The training materials will support BEAM staff in running these programs (including seasonal, part-time staff as well as full-time program delivery staff). In some cases, you will be able to draw upon existing BEAM implementation and training materials and you will be tasked with ensuring that they match Design Team standard protocols. In other cases, you will be part of the team creating new programming to address gaps and areas of growth in BEAM’s model, tasked with refining the vision of the Chief Program Officer and the Director of the Design Team and turning intended plans into comprehensive implementation and training materials. You will also remain highly involved in the iterative design process of new programs, collecting and synthesizing feedback and then using it to conduct improvement cycles until such time as the programs are codified.  

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Design Implementation Materials, Systems, and Procedures for New and Revised Program Modules 

• In consultation with the Senior Director of the Design Team and the Chief Program Officer, design materials to be used by students and program staff. 
• Strengthen, and refine program materials produced by others to ensure consistent and clear messaging and presentation.
• Work with the Salesforce Administrator to ensure data tracking is set up to support both measurement frameworks and programmatic data collection/storage. 
• Regularly review implementation of program modules and procedures, determine where improvements are needed and make changes.

Design Staff Training and Documentation for Revised Program Modules 

• Design training protocols to be codified including:
• Documentation and training of how to collect and monitor data and outcomes. 
• Documentation and training on key program requirements, as well as parameters for what cannot be changed and what can be customized. 
• Soliciting feedback on how processes are going and designing supplementary training to address areas of growth. 
• Review and update training materials based on formative feedback (staff surveys, program observations, feedback from stakeholders served). 

QUALIFICATIONS

• Knowledge and/or experience with training and learning best practices, with a focus on supporting adults of diverse backgrounds 
• Knowledge and/or experience building or documenting systems and/or procedures
• Knowledge of iterative design cycles
• Knowledge of learning management systems
• Knowledge of both in-person and remote training best practices  
• Strong analytical and problem solving skills
• Passion for BEAM's mission and previous experience working on a team to support students from historically marginalized backgrounds 
• Highly collaborative; eager to develop programs in consultation with others 
• Ability to balance multiple competing priorities and manage several projects simultaneously
• Ability to coordinate and communicate with multiple groups/stakeholders  
• Ability to coordinate across teams quickly, efficiently, and effectively
• Ability to keep track of many operational and logistical details 
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
• Strong organization skills with strong attention to detail
• Experience working with students, preferably with grades 6-12 

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• 5+ years of relevant work experience of increasing complexity, with at least 1 year at a nonprofit organization and at least 1 year applying the principles of project and time management to individual and team projects  
• Experience designing and implementing training programs 
• Experience with facilitation and/or implementing trainings  
• Experience in dealing with multiple projects simultaneously
• Experience with a learning management system
• Experience with a data management system, preferably Salesforce
• Experience with STEM education, STEM research, or STEM outreach
• Experience with out-of-school time learning, enrichment, and/or summer camps   
• Experience designing family engagement programming
• Experience working with school-based staff 
• Experience with BEAM’s programming, especially BEAM Discovery and/or BEAM Summer Away.

SALARY, BENEFITS AND OTHER DETAILS

The expected salary range for this position is $54,000-$80,000, depending on experience and background.
