Job Description
Business Insider is hiring a Data Visualization Director to join our editorial graphics team. This role will be overseeing a team of designers and developers to produce data graphics and visualizations for our biggest stories. They will report to the Executive Creative Director.

The Role & Team:

The ideal candidate is a thoughtful leader and expert data graphics designer who also has an extensive technical background to guide interactive projects from concept to finished product. This role will be responsible for assigning, editing, and project managing graphics, interactives, and larger-scale projects, like custom mini-sites built outside of our CMS. This person should have a passion for data journalism, visual storytelling, and problem solving.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Experience managing and art directing designers and developers
  • Digital design and development experience, preferably in a newsroom
  • Experience designing and building data visualizations and interactive information graphics
  • Ability to use Python, R, and Google Sheets to analyze and clean large datasets
  • Experience with coding languages including JavaScript (specifically D3), HTML, CSS/SCSS
  • Expert use of Github
  • Experience with frameworks such as Svelte a plus
  • Experience with cartography tools, such as QGIS and Mapbox a plus
  • Engineered and authored data-driven interactive features of their own, including data reporting, mapping, creative coding or scrollys
  • Expert knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite
  • Has technical expertise managing and maintaining backend codebases
  • Experience using project management platforms such as Monday
The ideal candidate has:
  • Keen eye for finding and framing data and visual focused stories
  • Knowledge of principles and standards of journalism
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects and work under deadlines
  • Smart, bold, and responsive approach to design
  • Ability to think big and not always conform
  • Ability to thoughtfully communicate and make the complex, simple
  • Experience hiring, onboarding, and training new hires a plus
  • Strong organization and communication skills
 

Salary & Benefits:

  • Salary: $130,000 - $160,000 (dependent on skills, experience, and competencies)
